Two Hibbing High School science teachers have earned certificates in renewable energy education.

Science teachers Pam Nichols and Shanna Eskeli completed the Center for Renewable Energy Education and Demonstration (CREED) Project’s course and earned their certificates and graduate credits from Hamline University.

The teachers join teacher Carl Sandness in having completed the course. Another four Hibbing teachers have completed a portion of the course.

CREED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Minnesotans about the impact that energy supply, conversion and use have on the environment and economy, according to the group’s website.

The organization provides energy course workshops for middle and high school teachers of science, mathematics and technological education, said CREED Lead Instructor Emeritus Roger Aiken, who was at Hibbing Tuesday to present the women with their certificates.

The teachers use what they learn in the course to mold energy lessons into their classroom curriculum, Aiken said.

The purpose is to encourage more students to become interested in careers in science, math, engineering or technology — especially the energy field, he said.

Eskeli and Nichols completed their coursework during two-week live-in summer sessions at the Laurentian Environmental Center over the past two summers and completed other assignments throughout the year.

The course also took them on field trips to view renewable energy being used in the form of windmills, biomass and more.

“Pam and Shanna have worked very hard,” Aiken said. “… They can feel rightly proud of what they’ve done. And what they’ve done, and what Carl did before them, is bring honor to their school.”
